Documents & Files: How To Use

The My Documents & Files view is your central place for storing and accessing all non-image files shared within BestInterest. This list includes:

  • Files you upload directly to My Files.
  • Files sent as attachments in messages or texts through the app.
  • Files sent to you by your coparent as text messages.

Key points to know:

  • Solo Mode: Your coparent cannot view files in this list because they don’t use the app. If you invite your coparent to join you in the app, any files you previously shared here will be viewable by them.
  • Together Mode: Your coparent can see the files you upload here. You can see the files they add as well. Any Tags you add are not shared.
  • Automatic Date Sorting: Files are shown in the order they were uploaded.
  • Deleting Files:
    • You can delete a file only if you uploaded it and it’s not attached to any other message.
    • If it is attached to a message, deleting it will remove it from My Files, but it will still be viewable in that message.
  • Opening or Saving Files:
    • Tap the download button to open the file or save it to your device.
    • Tap the edit icon to change the file’s title in the list (this title is shared between you and your coparent).
  • Supported File Types: BestInterest supports most common file formats, including:
    • PDF (.pdf)
    • Word documents (.doc, .docx)
    • Excel spreadsheets (.xls, .xlsx)
    • PowerPoint presentations (.ppt, .pptx)
    • Plain text (.txt)
    • Rich text (.rtf)
    • CSV (.csv)
    • OpenDocument formats (.odt, .ods, .odp)
    • Audio files (.mp3, .wav, .m4a)
    • Video files: .mp4, .mov
    • iWork files: .pages, .numbers, .keynote
  • AI Filtering: Note that files are NOT reviewed by the AI and may contain offensive content. We also do not support virus scanning, so please use a virus scanner for additional protection.

FAQ: Documents & Files

Q: Can I delete a file?

A: Yes, with some rules:

  • You can only delete files you uploaded.
  • If the file is not attached to any other message, it will be completely removed.
  • If the file is attached to a message, deleting it will remove it from My Files but it will still be viewable in that message’s history.
  • Your Document name will appear in Coparent History record for both the original upload and the deletion.

Q: Can I delete a file my coparent uploaded?

A: No. Files uploaded by your coparent remain available to preserve a complete record.

Q: Can I upload images here?

A: No. My Files is for non-image files. Images are viewable in the Photos section of the app.

Q: Who can see my files?

A: In Solo Mode, only you can view them. In Together Mode, or if you’ve invited your coparent to join your account, they can also view them.

Q: How do I open or save a file?

A: Tap the download button to open the file or save it to your device.

Q: How do I rename a file?

A: Tap the edit icon to change its title in the list. The updated title will be visible to both you and your coparent.

Q: Are Tags shared with my coparent?

A: As with all tags, tags are private to you and not shared with your coparent. Use them to help organize your files in the way that is most helpful for you.

Q: If I send a file in a message, will it appear here?

A: Yes. Any non-image file sent as an attachment through BestInterest automatically appears in My Files.
