When it comes to custody trading, many co-parents default to a night-for-night trading system. When you need to adjust your custody calendar, you each look at your calendars and see what you can trade to keep it fair. While this approach might seem fair on the surface, it can lead to unnecessary complications, engagement, confusion, and even conflict.
Enter Night Credits—a flexible, straightforward method for tracking custody exchanges that simplifies the process and ensures fairness over time. Here’s why this innovative approach is a game-changer for modern co-parenting.
Night Credits are a custody trading system where each custody exchange is logged as a “credit” rather than trading specific nights-for-nights. This method tracks the number of nights a parent takes or gives up, without requiring both parents to agree in advance on exact makeup dates. It’s an adaptable, simple, and efficient solution for co-parents who prioritize flexibility and fairness.
Adopting Night Credits is simple. All you need is a reliable way to log and track custody exchanges. That’s where our free custody trading Google Sheet comes in.
We’ve created a free, easy-to-use Google Sheets template specifically designed for co-parents to track custody exchanges and Night Credits. Here’s how it works:
Using this template, you can keep custody exchanges clear, fair, and drama-free.
Night Credits reflect the realities of modern co-parenting, where schedules can be unpredictable and flexibility is essential. By focusing on fairness over time rather than rigid exchanges, this system promotes cooperation and reduces conflict.
Whether you’re dealing with work trips, family events, or simply the unexpected, Night Credits empower co-parents to prioritize what matters most: the well-being of their children and a respectful partnership with each other.
It is important to mention that it’s most effective when both parents don’t assign a “value” to a credit, or even assume it’s good to have extra “credits”. The key idea behind the Night Credit system is that credits should balance out over time, so that parents end up with 50% of the nights (or whatever the custody agreement states). Over time as the kids age, parents tend to value nights “off” versus nights “on” differently, so the focus should be on balance versus keeping things “fair” which assumes a value to the credits. So while it might be tempting to refuse to give a credit to your coparent when they ask you to take the kids for a night, credits should always be assigned, regardless of who is asking or why. Keeping the balance is our number one priority.
