The short answer

BestInterest may be best for

Parents whose co-parent will not sign up, will not pay, or will not download anything, and who still need to reach them and keep records.

Other co-parenting apps may be best for

Families where both parents will participate, so per-parent accounts and shared scheduling are workable.

You can choose an app today. You cannot choose whether the other parent installs it. That makes participation requirements a practical first question: can you keep private records, send a specific request, or actually exchange texts and calls without their account?

My co-parent refuses an app: what do I do next?

  1. Keep the required channel working. Check any named app, response window, and urgent-contact procedure in your parenting arrangements. Keep an ordered platform in place.
  2. Start your private workspace. Choose Solo Mode for your own coaching, journal, calendar, tasks, expenses, and supported exports. No linked co-parent or invite is required. Core tools have a Free starting point.
  3. Add a communication number if needed. Boundary Line starts on Connect. Follow setup to select an available number; availability depends on the countries offered in the number selector. Your co-parent uses that number from their ordinary phone.
  4. Share it clearly and test it. Confirm an actual text and a supported call reach you before relying on the new route. Agree on how urgent child-related information should reach you. Texts or calls to your old personal number do not automatically appear in BestInterest.
  5. Choose protection and notification settings. Connect provides the number. Protect and Protect Plus add Message Shield filtering for incoming texts. Keep response windows and urgent needs in view when adjusting alerts.

Follow the Boundary Line setup walkthrough.

A fictional message to introduce the number

Use this only where a new route fits your communication arrangements:

Please text or call [Boundary Line number] about the children starting [date]. You can use your ordinary phone; there is no app to install. Please send a test text today so I can confirm it arrived. For urgent child-related matters, use [agreed procedure].

If they will not use the new number, those messages will not enter that route. Keep a functioning required channel and use your private tools separately. For an existing exchange, Coparent Coach can review context you paste or a screenshot you upload. This is separate from capturing future texts through Boundary Line.

Three different meanings of “works alone”

Private tools, a shared link, and ongoing communication solve different problems

Exchange texts and calls with a non-memberWhich number must they use, where is it available, and which plan adds filtering?BestInterest Boundary Line on Connect and higher. Message Shield requires Protect or Protect Plus.

Reviewed November 4, 2026 against BestInterest plans, Solo Mode, Boundary Line, AppClose’s documented solo/link features, and Custody X Change’s solo tools. A private journal, a request link, and a dedicated messaging number are distinct capabilities. Check current provider details and sharing permissions.

Account requirements for the main communication options

  • BestInterest: no linked account is required for private Solo Mode tools. Boundary Line adds texts and calls with a non-member through a dedicated number on Connect and higher. Free CSV exports and paid Verified Reports are separate products with different scopes.
  • OurFamilyWizard: the official plans page describes separate subscriptions for linked parent accounts in the family forum. Check qualifying waivers and the actual annual charge. See the head-to-head.
  • TalkingParents: its pricing FAQ allows co-parents to use different plans within its account-based communication service. Verify the records access each parent needs. See the head-to-head.
  • AppClose: its official feature list describes Solo Mode and links sent to non-users. That is useful for specific requests; it is different from a dedicated phone number. See the head-to-head.
  • Custody X Change: the provider documents solo access to tools apart from messaging. Linking with a co-parent serves a separate coordination purpose. See the comparison.

Other options to verify for your situation

2Houses describes a family subscription with scheduling and finances. Civil Communicator provides human-reviewed communication. Cozi focuses on household calendars and lists. Confirm their current participation and sharing requirements for the exact workflow you need; a shared organizer is a different decision from receiving a non-member’s texts.

We could not fully verify current Coparently or WeParent plan and participation details in this refresh. Confirm availability and requirements with the provider before relying on an older comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What do I do if my co-parent refuses to use an app?

Start with your required communication arrangements. BestInterest Solo Mode provides private tools without a linked co-parent. For texts and calls with a non-member, Boundary Line on Connect and higher provides a dedicated number where available. Share that number, test a text and call, and confirm an urgent-contact route before relying on it.

Will texts to my personal number automatically appear in BestInterest?

No. Your co-parent must text or call the Boundary Line number. Messages to your personal number do not automatically forward into BestInterest. If they will not use the new number, keep the required working channel in place and use private tools separately.

Is Solo Mode the same as Boundary Line?

No. Solo Mode is your private workspace for coaching and organization without a linked co-parent. Boundary Line is the dedicated-number feature on Connect and higher. Message Shield filtering of incoming Boundary Line texts requires Protect or Protect Plus.

Can I start without paying for both parents?

BestInterest has an ongoing Free plan for core private tools; only the BestInterest user needs a paid plan for Boundary Line. OurFamilyWizard requires subscriptions for linked parent accounts. TalkingParents parents can choose different paid plans. AppClose has paid subscriptions and separately supports link requests to non-users. Qualifying waivers are separate from standard free access.

Can I use this if an order names another platform?

Keep the required platform and response procedure in place. Private BestInterest coaching and organization can support you alongside it. A new number or an additional app does not change an order’s communication requirements.

What if my co-parent refuses both the app and my new communication number?

You can still use private tools, but Boundary Line cannot capture a conversation the other parent never sends to that number. Keep any required channel and urgent-contact route available. Save the messages you receive there, and use a pasted exchange or screenshot for private coaching if you want help preparing a reply. That does not move the live conversation into BestInterest. If a required communication arrangement is not working, discuss the next step with your attorney or relevant professional before changing access.
