How to Make and Receive Boundary Line Calls
Boundary Line gives parents in Solo Mode another safe and simple way to stay connected with a coparent who does not use the app. While we feel that coparenting communication is best in written form, we understand that sometimes a phone call is necessary—especially in emergencies.
How Calling Works
When Your Coparent Calls You
- If your coparent dials your assigned BestInterest number, you will get a call on your phone from that same assigned number.
- When you answer, you will be asked to confirm you’d like to accept the call, and then you will be directly connected to your coparent.
- Don’t worry, your coparent simply hears ringing on the other end, so they will not know if you reject the call.
- This ensures your BestInterest number works like a real phone number while still protecting your personal phone number.
Calling Your Coparent
- To call your coparent, open Calls in BestInterest and tap Call Coparent, or dial your BestInterest number from your phone as a normal phone call. Either route launches the carrier call in your phone app.
- The call will automatically route to your coparent and they will see a call coming from your BestInterest number.
- Tip: Save your assigned BestInterest number to your contacts with your coparent’s name. That way, their name will appear when they call you. And if you need to reach them, you can just tap their name.
Call Settings
You are always in control of how calls work for you. To disable or turn off incoming calls from your coparent, open Settings > Boundary Line Calling and choose Disable Calls under Disable Inbound Calls.
Protect Plus subscribers can choose to automatically record Boundary Line voice calls. Before enabling recording, BestInterest asks you to acknowledge that call recording laws vary by location and that you are responsible for getting any legally required consent from everyone on the call.
Protect Plus subscribers can also turn on Create Call Transcripts in Settings > Boundary Line Calling. When enabled, supported Boundary Line calls are transcribed automatically; transcripts are usually ready in about a day, but processing can take longer. If call recording is off, audio is temporarily processed and deleted after transcription.
Call Limits
Boundary Line calling is included with Connect and higher plans. Calling allowances vary by subscription: Protect includes up to 200 phone-call minutes per month with calls up to 60 minutes, while Protect Plus includes unlimited private phone calling. Connect members can review their current allowance in the app. When an account reaches its current allowance, the caller will hear that the person they are calling is not available.
Voice Calling vs. Video Calling
Voice calling through an assigned Boundary Line number is only available to parents using Solo Mode. This allows you to use your BestInterest number like a real number without needing your coparent’s participation in the app.
For users in Collaborative Mode (both parents using the app), BestInterest offers secure in-app audio and video calling. Supported in-app calls include options for call recording, transcription, and customizable time boundaries. Boundary Line voice calling and Collaborative Mode in-app calling are separate options; your account uses the calling feature for your current mode. To learn more, read our guide on Video Calling Options.
Calling Features FAQ
Can I make or receive calls in BestInterest?
Yes. With Boundary Line in Solo Mode, you can make and receive phone calls with your coparent using your BestInterest number. This keeps your real number private while still acting like a real phone line.
What happens when my coparent calls me?
When your coparent dials your BestInterest number, the call will show as coming from your BestInterest phone number on your phone. If you answer, and you confirm you would like to accept the call, you’ll be directly connected to your coparent.
Will my coparent know I am using BestInterest?
Your Boundary Line appears as a phone number that can receive calls and messages. When voicemail is available and enabled on Protect Plus, callers hear a standard, unbranded greeting inviting them to leave a message. Otherwise, they hear that the person they called is unavailable.
How does Boundary Line voicemail work?
Protect Plus includes voicemail for incoming Boundary Line calls in Solo Mode. When available, voicemail is on by default. Unanswered, busy, or declined calls can receive a voicemail; outside your call hours, callers go directly to voicemail without ringing your phone.
Messages can be up to three minutes long. Saved audio and automatic transcripts appear in Calls, alongside your call recordings. You can play, download, or share the audio and open the transcript when it is ready. Transcripts may take about a day or longer; audio is available separately. A New badge stays until you open the voicemail or its transcript, or start playback. Notifications follow your existing notification settings.
Can I turn voicemail off?
Yes. Open Settings > Boundary Line Calling and turn Voicemail off. Incoming calls can still ring during your call hours, but callers cannot leave new voicemails. Saved voicemails remain accessible. Turning off live-call recordings or transcripts does not turn off voicemail.
Disable Calls blocks both incoming calls and voicemail. Your voicemail preference is saved, so allowing calls again restores your chosen voicemail setting.
Can I call my coparent using my Boundary Line number?
Yes. Open Calls in BestInterest and tap Call Coparent, or dial your own assigned Boundary Line number from the cell phone number saved to your BestInterest account. Either route launches the carrier call in your phone app. BestInterest routes the call to your coparent, who sees it coming from your Boundary Line number. When you call your coparent, they are not asked to confirm receipt of your call.
Does this mean I can block my coparent on my phone?
Yes! If you block your coparent on your phone, you will still be able to get calls and messages from them using your BestInterest number.
Can I prevent calls from my coparent in BestInterest?
Yes. In Settings > Boundary Line Calling, choose Disable Calls under Disable Inbound Calls if you don’t want to be reachable by phone. Choose Allow Calls to turn incoming calls back on.
Are calls recorded or transcribed?
Boundary Line calls are recorded or transcribed only if you are on Protect Plus and turn on the corresponding setting under Settings > Boundary Line Calling. You can enable automatic call recording, Create Call Transcripts, both, or neither. Recording laws vary by state and country, so you are responsible for checking local laws and getting any required consent before recording. Transcripts are usually ready in about a day, but processing can take longer; if recording is off, audio is temporarily processed and deleted after transcription.
Are there limits on calling?
Calling allowances vary by subscription. Protect includes up to 200 phone-call minutes per month with calls up to 60 minutes, and Protect Plus includes unlimited private phone calling. Connect members can review their current allowance in the app. Once an account reaches its current allowance, callers will be told that the subscriber is not available.
Can I call 911 or emergency services with my BestInterest number?
No. In a true emergency, please dial 911 or your local emergency number. The BestInterest number can be used to call your coparent (or vice versa) in an emergency.
Why is Boundary Line voice calling only available in Solo Mode?
Right now, Boundary Line voice calling through an assigned phone number is available only for Solo Mode users. If both parents are on BestInterest (Collaborative Mode), we offer secure in-app audio and video calling as an alternative.
